| Ring-turning |
In the Eastern Ore Mountains, particularly in the Seiffen region, you can still experience this craft, which originated in the 19th century. It was developed by toy makers in order to be able to meet rising demands, since with this technique they could produce a considerably larger quantity of wooden animals and figurines. For this technique, wet spruce wood is clamped to the turning lathe, turned radially and fitted at both ends with several recesses, grooves and dents. From these so-called rings, 40 to 60 figurines are cut off which are subsequently carved into their final shapes. Once well-packed, these products are finally shipped throughout the world.
